Making the right choice

When choosing your programme of study you should consider suitable combinations of courses. You will be choosing 3 subjects to study at A’ level or BTEC Level 3 and your choices can be exclusively A’ Level or BTEC, or a combination of the 2 courses, depending on your subject preferences and whether you achieve the entry criteria for each course.

The subjects that you choose are two year courses and cannot be terminated at any point before the completion of the course.

There are some combinations of subjects which are preferred or required by Universities as enrolment criteria for Degree courses. Examples of this are:

  • CHEMISTRY, BIOLOGY (REQUIRED) AND MATHS TO STUDY MEDICINE.
  • ART AND/OR A DESIGN TECHNOLOGY (REQUIRED): E.G. FASHION AND CLOTHING AND ENGLISH LITERATURE TO STUDY AN ART DEGREE OR A COURSE SUCH AS FASHION JOURNALISM.

Many students are not however certain of their career pathway when choosing subjects to study in the 6th form and in this situation, it makes good sense to choose subjects that you are good at; that you enjoy and that will provide you with a broad range of knowledge and skills. As part of the Sixth Form Curriculum all students attend a Masterclass and Core RE lesson per week.

Sixth Form students have opportunities to take part in super curricular activities and community work for example being a member of the Community Outreach Team, Liturgy Team, teaching IT skills to older people as well as opportunities to attend Subject specific workshops, taster days and lectures.
